SUPRAŚL AND THE BISON – vol. 1

Below you'll find a description of the whole route, with a link to it on Google Maps at the end.

Route: Supraśl, Kopna Góra, Arboretum, Silvarium, Insurgents’ Monument, Sokołda, Supraśl.

Main features of the route:

Little truck traffic,

Mostly roads through forests,

Speed limit of 70 km/h on most stretches (perfect for a 125 🙂 )

Plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy nature,

It can be short or long.

Let’s go. Our set-up: a Zontes C2 + a car – 2 adults and two kids. A trip of more than half a day, so both the grown-ups and the little ones get something out of it. Our starting point is Supraśl. Just a short stop here – the playground by the reservoir, so the kids can stretch their legs.

Supraśl (you can spend anywhere from 30 minutes to 5 hours here)

If I tried to list all the attractions of this place, I’d run out of space on the page. We start from the car park by the amphitheatre. You’ll find beaches, a playground and a path along the backwaters of the Supraśl river. And best of all – “Fabryka” (the Factory), a chill-out zone, is opening.

We ride along the boulevard and pass the art school – the building itself is a work of art and a historic monument. Then the Orthodox monastery. Both are must-sees.

On the way out of town there’s the Biodiversity Park with an observation tower. We ride over the bridge to the Arboretum and Kopna Góra. About 11 km

12 minutes later we pull up at the gates of the Arboretum named after the Insurgents – in short, a botanical garden and a forest park in one. A good place to get some fresh air :). A stroll along the paths, admiring the spring flowers and trees. Then a quick ride to the bison enclosure – maybe a minute away.

Next to the bison enclosure there are several spots with shelters where you can organise a get-together after booking in advance with the State Forests – you might even get permission for a barbecue 100 m from the bison 🙂

We walk to the enclosure. The chance of seeing a bison is 99.99%. Along the paths you can read the story of how this species was saved from extinction. There are 2 observation towers by the enclosure, but even without them you’ll have no trouble spotting these creatures. This is a stop you can’t skip. The fence looks like something straight out of Jurassic Park.

Poczopek – Silvarium (1 h)

We head to Silvarium (12 km – 15 minutes). By the car park there’s a small playground in the shade of the trees. It’s a forest garden – perhaps that sounds too general, but it’s hard to put into words. There’s lots of information about bees (a mini museum), footbridges over ponds, owl aviaries and plenty of plants.

Insurgents’ Monument

On the way back, past Kopna Góra, we come to the Insurgents’ Monument. A bit of history is worth seeing and remembering too. Thanks to the earlier attractions, the kids don’t complain 🙂

Sokołda – food

After a route like this, everyone gets hungry – on the way, past the monument, we stop at the Zajazd Sokołda inn. Oh my, the food there! In my opinion – and not only mine – it’s a must for anyone visiting the area. Note: it’s often full, so it’s worth booking a table in advance.

If not Sokołda, then – Supraśl

We ride back to Supraśl. Here you have a few options for a bite to eat. One of them is the legendary Jarzębinka. Anyone who remembers the communist era will get an instant flashback – there’s always a queue here, or maybe just whenever I try. Let us know if you managed to eat something there 🙂

ROUTE – from 4 h to 8 h (depending on what you plan 🙂

OK. Below you’ll find a link to Google Maps so you can plan a few things yourself. Remember, I haven’t described all the attractions along the route – there’s much more waiting for you out there.

Left hand up and ride safe!
